European Parliament elections 2019

On Thursday 23 May 2019, you will be able to vote for the Dutch members of the European Parliament Voting passes will be sent early May.

What to bring

When you go to cast your vote, you must bring:

  • Your voting pass
  • A valid passport, ID card or driver’s licence. Your proof of identity may have expired, but it must not be more than five years out of date (i.e. it must be valid until 24 May 2014).

ID lost or stolen?

If you lose your ID, or if it is stolen, the polling station may verify your identity based on a photocopy of the lost item police report in combination with a document stating your name and photograph (such as a travel pass or library card).

No ID?

If you have no ID, you can authorize someone to cast a vote on your behalf. Go to: Authorizing someone to vote on your behalf.

When

  • Polling stations will be open on Thursday 23 May from 7.30 a.m. until 9 p.m.
  • Exception: the polling station at the main station on Stationsplein will be open from 6.30 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Where

  • The overview of 150 polling stations (PDF 130 kB) is also shown on the reverse side of the list of candidates that will be delivered to every home address on 9 May.
  • You may vote in any polling station in the municipality of Groningen.
  • Your nearest polling station is indicated on your voting pass.

If you are unable to cast your own vote, you can authorize someone to vote on your behalf. If you want to vote outside your municipality but in the province of Groningen, ask for a voter’s card authorizing a voter to vote elsewhere.

Election Taxi

If you are disabled or have a mobility impairment, you can order the Election Taxi free of charge!

  • You can make an appointment between 15 May and no later than 12.00pm Wednesday 22 May. Call +31 50 3 666 655 or send an email to callcenternoord@connexxion.nl
  • You will be taken from your home to an easily accessible polling station nearby. After you have voted, the driver will bring you home again.
  • The times that you book are approximate. This means that the taxi may arrive a little earlier or later than the time you arranged. The taxi may also need to pick up several people from different addresses.

Who is allowed to vote

You are allowed to vote for the Dutch members of the European Parliament if you:

  • were registered in the Municipal Database at an address in Groningen on 9 April 2019;
  • will be 18 years of age or older on 23 May 2019;
  • have not been excluded from voting; and
  • you have Dutch nationality or
  • the nationality of another European Union member state and you have indicated that you wish to vote in the Netherlands.

What to do if you lose or do not receive your voting pass

  • You will receive your voting pass in early May. If you have not received a voting pass, or if you have lost your voting pass, you can request a new one.
  • The Municipality must have received your written request by Monday 20 May 2019 at the latest, as your voting pass will be sent to you by post.
  • Please be aware that if you submit your request after this date, the Municipality cannot guarantee that you will receive your replacement voting pass on time!
  • U can request a replacement voting pass in person at one of the Civil Affairs counters up until 12.00 pm on Wednesday 22 May 2019.

Authorizing someone to vote on your behalf

If you are unable to vote on Thursday 23 May 2019, you can authorize someone to vote on your behalf.

Authorizing a voter from the Municipality of Groningen

Authorization on voting pass

  • Complete the authorization form on the reverse side of your voting pass.
  • Give the person you have authorized to vote on your behalf a copy of your proof of ID.
  • Your passport, ID card or driver's licence must be valid until 24 May 2014.

Requesting written authorization

  • You can use the application form.
  • You can also use this application form if you don’t have a valid ID (valid until 24 May 2014).
  • Both you and the person you authorize must sign the request form.
  • This written request must reach the Municipality by Monday 20 May 2019 at the latest.
  • Postal and email addresses are shown on the form.

Voting in another municipality

If you wish to vote in another municipality in the Netherlands for the European Parliament election, you can request a voter’s pass.

Requesting a voter’s pass in person

You can request a voter’s pass in person at one of the Civil Affairs counters up until 12.00pm on Wednesday 22 May 2019.

  • The municipality must receive your written request no later than Monday 20 May 2019.
  • The postal and email addresses are at the bottom of the form.

Postal voting during a temporary stay abroad

If you are staying abroad temporarily, you can also vote in the European Parliament election by post. The municipality of The Hague handles the applications for this.

Extra information for British voters

Because Brexit has been postponed until at least April 12 (and possibly later), British citizens who have registered to participate in the election can vote in the Netherlands on 23 May.

You can submit a registration request using a Y 32 form up to and including the day of the nomination of candidates, 9 April 2019. Requests received after 9 April 2019 will no longer be eligible for this election. The voting pass will be sent at the beginning of May.
