Groningen is een compacte stad. Het platteland om de stad heen heet bij ons ‘ommeland’. Om van het ommeland geen ‘rommelland’ te maken en om onze stad levendig te houden, willen we de stad verdichten. De beschikbare ruimte in de huidige stad gaan we dichter bebouwen. Meerstad wordt onze laatste grote nieuwbouwwijk. De rest van de nieuwe huizen bouwen we in de bestaande stad.
De Rijksoverheid wil dat minstens 25% van alle nieuwe woningen, winkels en kantoren in bestaande steden gebouwd wordt. Door het vele bouwen langs stadsranden en snelwegen verrommelt ons landschap. Steden in Nederland moeten daarom verdichten. In de afgelopen jaren is in Nederlandse steden veel hoogbouw verrezen. Woontorens voorzien in een behoefte, maar er bestaat ook grote vraag naar grondgebonden woningen met een eigen buitenruimte. Maar hoe bouw je zulke woningen in de stad, waar ruimte schaars is? Intense Low-Rise
Groningen is a compact city. We in Groningen refer to the countryside around the city as the ‘ommeland’ (bordering countryside). To ensure that this ‘ommeland’ does not become a so-called ‘rommelland’ (disordering countryside) and to keep our city vibrant, we wish to densify the city. We shall construct more buildings on the available space in the present city. Meerstad will be our last major new-construction suburb. We shall build the rest of the new houses in the existing city.
The government wants at least 25% of all new houses, shops and offices to be built in the existing towns and cities. Our landscape is becoming cluttered due to relentless construction along urban peripheries and motorways. That is why the cities in the Netherlands ought to densify. Much high-rise has appeared in Dutch cities in the past few years. Apartment blocks do meet a need, but there is also a great demand for houses with individual gardens or exterior space.
