The city of Groningen developed around a strategic historic trading location, on the banks of two rivers between the clay flats to the north and the sand of Drenthe to the south. Throughout the centuries, it has remained a centre of trade and industry. Today, the service sector, transport and logistics, and the foodstuffs industry are particularly well represented. Increasingly, ICT and the life sciences are finding their place in the city.
